Chapter 44

Brenda Sewell opened the front door to another news reporter. Bright lights made her raise her hand to her eyes, and a barrage of smartly-dressed men and women with microphones started shouting at her. She slammed the door. She turned to walk down the hall and tapped on her parent’s bedroom door, then slowly turned the knob. Her mother had locked herself in her room. She was not coming out.

People continued to come in and out of the home with food, sympathy, and many tears. The people in her neighborhood had grown up together, or had watched Robert grow up. But there were also intruders on their grief and Brenda peered out the window at them: a host of television newscasters, broadcasting from her own front lawn. News vans parked in front of their home. It looked like a movie set.

Robert’s best friend Phillip was in Lebanon, Tennessee when his stepmother called him with the news. She had loved Robert like a son, and both of them sobbed. “He was,” Phillip says, “my first true friend. Like family. He sincerely cared about me as a person.” When he turned on the television, it was so hard to fathom: there was the McDonald’s, just like he had left it only the night before, but this time yellow police tape fluttered in the wind across the parking lot. There were police cars and television news trucks all over the place.
